Casablanca – Egypt crashed out of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Malawi on Saturday in the second round of Group C.
Rose Kabzere gave Malawi the lead in the 31th minute before Faith Chimzimu doubled the advantage in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.
Malawi were reduced to 10 players in the 52nd minute after Rose Alufandika was sent off. However, Temwa Chawinga added a third goal in the 68th minute to put the result beyond doubt.
Eman Hassan pulled one back for Egypt two minutes later, but the Pharaohs failed to build on the goal as Malawi held firm until the final whistle.
Egypt exited the tournament at the group stage for the third time, repeating their early eliminations in the 1998 and 2016 editions.
The Pharaohs have now suffered two straight defeats after opening their campaign with a heavy 6-0 loss to Nigeria, leaving them without a point.
Egypt will conclude their Group C campaign against Zambia next Wednesday.
