Rabat – Reports of missing people by Moroccan families searching for their relatives who disappeared during the Ceuta mass migration crisis increased, reports said.
EFE said that many family members and friends of those who disappeared during the mass entry on July 30 shared photographs and contacted the media to ask about their missing family members.
The report also quoted police sources who confirmed that the relatives have been advised to file complaints so that the data can be compared with the bodies recovered.
Authorities in Spain said 67 people died during the mass crossing.
“It is only known that one of them was a woman.”
Several videos document the mass crossing to Ceuta that took place earlier this week and earlier in July, sparking uproar and division.
While some condemn the situation, others urge the government in Morocco to launch an investigation.
Some also hold the government accountable, citing unemployment and lack of opportunities, while others emphasize that Ceuta and Spain are no better.
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) urged authorities to disclose the fate of those reported missing during attempts to reach the enclave.
It urged Spanish authorities to also investigate alleged physical assaults against migrants during the migration crisis, expressing deep concern over the growing number of missing persons.
Morocco’s opposition party, the Justice and Development Party (PJD), also called for the creation of a national commission of inquiry under royal instructions to investigate the unprecedented mass migration.
The party expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident and prayed for the victims, describing the events as painful and deeply concerning.
The PJD also criticized the government’s silence in the aftermath of the events, accusing it of failing to communicate with the public. It further criticized public media for not adequately covering the developments, arguing that many Moroccans were forced to rely on foreign media outlets for information.
