Agadir – King Mohammed VI has said Morocco’s decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway after President Donald Trump honors Rabat-Washington bilateral ties.
In a letter on July 2, King Mohammed VI informed the US President of his decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway after him.
The monarch said that although Moroccan-American relations have always been based on “close friendship and constant loyalty,” they have reached a stronger level of strength and cooperation during Trump’s two presidential terms.
The monarch recalled the US recognition in 2020 of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, describing the decision as a historic step that “will forever be etched in the memory of Moroccans” and gave new momentum to bilateral relations.
“In homage to this testament of friendship and peace, and as a personal expression of My High consideration, I have taken the decision to name one of the Kingdom’s most important road infrastructures after Donald J. Trump Highway,” King Mohammed VI stated.
Over 1,055 kilometers, the expressway is the longest road infrastructure project in Africa, linking Morocco’s northern and southern regions while serving as a key connection between Europe and the African continent.
“A strategic axis of vital importance, it links the north and south of Morocco, while anchoring Europe to the African continent,” the King said, adding that the road “unifies our country, just as your leadership has brought our two nations closer together in an unprecedented way.”
President Donald Trump expressed his appreciation for the gesture in a message published on his social media platform Truth Social on July 26.
“Thank you to His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, highly respected. What a tremendous honor!” Trump wrote, adding that he hoped to travel the full length of the highway “someday, and hopefully very soon.”
The naming of the expressway also carries broader geopolitical significance, reflecting the evolution of Morocco-US relations and the two countries’ cooperation on regional development, trade, and strategic issues.
