Rabat – Lionel Messi marked his return from the 2026 FIFA World Cup with two goals as Inter Miami secured a 4-2 victory over Atlético San Luis in their opening Leagues Cup match on Wednesday.

The match at the Nu Stadium was halted for about 30 minutes during the second half after lightning was detected in the area.

Messi opened the scoring in the 11th minute before adding his second in the 44th minute, helping Inter Miami establish control of the contest. He also set up defender Micael’s goal from a well-delivered set piece in first-half stoppage time, as the hosts carried a comfortable 4-1 lead into the break.

Messi returned to Inter Miami’s starting lineup for his second appearance since the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he led Argentina to a second consecutive final before falling 1-0 to Spain.

The 39-year-old had made his first post-World Cup appearance as a substitute, playing 37 minutes in Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Telasco Segovia and Micael also found the net, while Noah Allen provided three assists as Inter Miami extended its unbeaten run to eight matches.

Atlético San Luis managed to score twice through Rafa Llorente and Eduardo Águila, but the Mexican side was unable to recover after conceding four first-half goals to Inter Miami.
