Casablanca – Moroccan internationals Neil El Aynaoui and Azzedine Ounahi have quickly secured European opportunities with their new clubs, earning places in RB Leipzig and Panathinaikos’ continental squads for the 2026-27 season.
Aynaoui joined Leipzig from Roma in the final days of the summer transfer window, while Ounahi completed his move from Girona to Panathinaikos shortly afterward.
Despite the late timing of both transfers, Leipzig and Panathinaikos managed to register the Moroccan midfielders for European competition, ensuring they remain eligible to represent their new clubs on the continental stage.
El Aynaoui will be part of Leipzig’s squad for the Champions League, giving the 24-year-old an opportunity to make his mark in Europe’s premier club competition.
His inclusion comes alongside growing praise from Leipzig head coach Martín Demichelis, who has highlighted the midfielders versatility and identified him as a potential option to replace the injured Rocco Reitz.
“El aynaoui is a very good player in the defensive midfield and central midfield positions. He is also an experienced playmaker and can help the team in different roles,” Demichelis said on Thursday.
The coach’s comments suggest Aynaoui could have an important role to play at Leipzig, particularly given his ability to operate in multiple midfield positions.
Ounahi, meanwhile, has been included in Panathinaikos’ squad for the UEFA Conference League following his return to the Greek side.
The Moroccan previously spent time at Panathinaikos on loan from Marseille and now returns to the club after his spell at Girona, where he featured during the 2025-26 campaign.
With both players registered for European competition, Aynaoui and Ounahi will have the opportunity to begin their latest chapters at club level while representing Moroccan football on the continental stage.
