Rabat – Ugandan footballer David Owori was assaulted on Tuesday evening by a group of unidentified attackers while he was close to his residence, according to Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor.
The attack proved fatal, and he died on Wednesday after suffering severe injuries.
The BBC reported that witnesses saw several assailants repeatedly strike Owori with paving stones before robbing him of his belongings and fleeing the scene.
The shocking nature of the attack has sent waves of grief throughout Uganda’s football community and beyond.
Asan Kasingye, spokesperson for SC Villa, explained that Owori was ambushed by criminals at around 8:00 p.m. while he was on his way home. He described the incident as a violent and senseless attack that left the player critically injured.
Shortly after confirming that Owori had been admitted to hospital in critical condition, Villa Sports Club announced the heartbreaking news of his death.
In a statement shared on social media, the club said: “We have lost more than a player—we have lost a leader, brother and friend. Our deepest prayers are with his family. Rest well, Captain.”
Owori’s death marks a devastating loss for SC Villa, one of Uganda’s most successful football clubs, where he served as captain and was widely respected by teammates, supporters, and the wider football community.
Tributes have continued to pour in as fans, fellow players, and football officials mourn the loss of a talented footballer whose life was cut short in such tragic circumstances.
Authorities are expected to continue investigating the attack as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
