Rabat – Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique has set his sights on a third consecutive UEFA Champions League title, saying the French champions have the motivation to match Real Madrid’s historic modern-era achievement.
Speaking to UEFA before Wednesday’s Super Cup final against Aston Villa, Luis Enrique said maintaining the hunger to win after two extraordinary seasons represents one of PSG’s biggest challenges.
“I focus on renewing that desire to win again. It is difficult to keep winning,” the Spanish coach said.
Luis Enrique pointed specifically to Real Madrid’s three consecutive Champions League triumphs between 2016 and 2018 under Zinedine Zidane.
“We have a unique challenge – something that is practically unprecedented in the history of European football, which is to draw level with Real Madrid if we can win a third consecutive Champions League,” he said.
He added that achieving the feat would represent “a whole other level,” insisting that PSG have the belief necessary to attempt it.
“I don’t think there is any team in Europe more motivated than us,” he said.
More precisely, PSG would become only the second club in the Champions League era to win three successive titles. Real Madrid achieved the feat in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Earlier in European Cup history, Madrid won five consecutive trophies between 1956 and 1960, while Ajax and Bayern Munich also completed three-title runs during the 1970s.
PSG chase another historic season
PSG enter the new campaign after successfully defending their Champions League crown in May.
Luis Enrique’s team defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in Budapest after the 2026 final finished 1-1 following extra time. The victory made PSG the first club to retain the Champions League since Real Madrid’s three-year run ended in 2018.
Their first European title had arrived a year earlier, when PSG produced a record 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the 2025 final in Munich.
Luis Enrique believes that consecutive European triumphs have changed how PSG are perceived across the continent.
“Two years ago, we were not one of the favourites,” he said. “Now, no one would say that Paris Saint-Germain aren’t the favourites. That’s something we have earned.”
PSG will begin their pursuit of more silverware on Wednesday when they face Europa League winners Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup at Stadion Salzburg in Austria. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. local time.
The French club are also defending the Super Cup after defeating Tottenham on penalties in the 2025 edition.
For Luis Enrique, however, the longer-term target is clear: maintaining PSG’s position among Europe’s elite and attempting to reproduce Real Madrid’s unprecedented three-year Champions League run in the modern competition.
