Agadir – Safi police have disrupted an attempted international drug trafficking operation, seizing nearly 4.9 tons of chira, or cannabis resin, in a rural area of the city.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of today by officers from the Provincial Judicial Police Service in Safi, based on precise information provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The security operation took place in the rural area of Abir, where police seized a utility vehicle loaded with chira after its driver abandoned the vehicle in an isolated area.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 111 bales of chira, with a combined weight of 4 tons and 890 kilograms.
The Provincial Judicial Police Service has opened a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to identify and arrest the vehicle’s driver.
Authorities are also seeking to identify and detain all individuals allegedly involved in the criminal network behind the trafficking operation.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and the DGST to combat international drug trafficking and the trafficking of psychotropic substances.
In a separate recent operation at the Guerguerat border crossing, south of Dakhla, Moroccan police and customs officers seized 61 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside compartments in the metal structure of an international freight truck arriving from a sub-Saharan African country.
