Rabat – Morocco is among six Arab countries that reiterated their support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Reuters quoted a joint statement from six heads of Arab football federations, including Morocco’s, expressing support for Infantino and his leadership.
“Recognizing the important role of Arab football in bringing people together and strengthening cooperation among football associations across the Arab world, we … express our full support for Mr Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, and reaffirm our confidence in his leadership and continued commitment to the development of football worldwide,” the joint statement reads.
Infantino has been under scrutiny, especially following the announcement of his private investment plan, which reports describe as failed.
UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF have been calling for Infantino to quit, stating that his recent plan to sell an interest in the World Cup was a “fundamental breach of trust.”
“Leadership in football is not a possession… It is not about holding – or demanding – power to be held. It is a duty of service to the football family that entrusts it. When trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned,” the three associations said in a recent letter.
The federations of Egypt, Qatar, Lebanon, Morocco, Sudan, and Mauritania back Infantino.
“We deeply appreciate Mr Infantino’s sustained efforts to advance football globally, expand opportunities across all regions and strengthen the game’s role in bringing people and communities together,” the heads of the Arab football federations said, including Morocco’s Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) President Fouzi Lekjaa.
The federations also emphasize their commitment to close cooperation with Infantino to further boost world football.
Morocco is among the countries that back Infantino’s decision to run for reelection.
Morocco’s FRMF said in May that it is happy to propose the candidacy of Infantino for the election, which will take place in March next year, exclusively supporting the Italian-Swiss official.
