Rabat – Mali has released French intelligence officer Yann V., who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for espionage.
Malian transitional leader General Assimi Goïta granted the officer a presidential pardon on Thursday. The decision covered his immediate removal from Malian territory, according to the Malian government, which said the pardon came after the intervention of a “brotherly country” whose “good offices” contributed to securing the release.
The government, however, did not name the country in its statement.
While the Malian statement and AFP did not attribute the mediation to Morocco, Moroccan outlet Le360 reported that Rabat played a decisive role in securing the officer’s release.
The outlet emphasized that the move is another example of Morocco’s “discreet diplomatic efforts” and growing role as a mediator between France and Sahelian countries.
The development comes as Morocco and Mali open a new page in their bilateral relations.
Both countries seek to strengthen cooperation across several areas, with Mali commending Morocco’s approach of non-interference and respect for Mali’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
Mali recognized Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only genuine political solution to end the Western Sahara dispute in April.
Mali also withdrew its recognition of Polisario’s self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), citing an in-depth analysis of the important dossier and its impact on sub-regional peace and security.
Yann’s case dates back to August 13, 2025, when he was arrested by Malian intelligence services during an operation. He was part of a security cooperation mission.
He faced accusations of establishing espionage and conspiracy networks aimed at destabilizing the transitional institutions and fomenting a coup.
He was tried in June 2026 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Mali said the presidential pardon “does not call into question the facts established by a contradictory judgment.”
The statement added that the officer had been tried and “convicted following a fair trial.”
