Temara – Charlton Athletic confirmed on Tuesday that police were called to the south-east London stadium following an incident in the early hours of Monday.
A 33-year-old man was found at the scene and pronounced dead. His family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.
The Metropolitan Police is investigating the circumstances of the death, which is being treated as unexpected. Officers are also looking into the possibility that the man fell from a height.
Charlton Athletic said it is fully cooperating with the investigation and appealed to anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.
The club expressed its condolences to the man’s family, friends, and loved ones, while asking for privacy for those affected by the incident.
Charlton also stressed that “there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of the club,” and praised its staff for their professionalism in dealing with what it described as a difficult and distressing situation.
The discovery came just days after Charlton opened their new Championship campaign at The Valley with a 2-1 victory over Derby County on Saturday.
Police have appealed for anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
