Rabat – Algerian authorities handed over 49 Moroccan nationals to Moroccan authorities through the Oujda-Maghnia border crossing on Wednesday, according to the Moroccan Association for Assistance to Migrants in Vulnerable Situations (AMSV).
The group said in a social media post that the latest group included two women and two minors. The migrants were among Moroccan nationals seeking to migrate, according to the association.
The handover was the second such operation in August. On August 12, Algerian authorities handed over 10 Moroccan nationals through the same border crossing, bringing the total returned this month to 59, according to the AMSV.
The association said it continues to follow several cases involving Moroccan migrants, including those who are detained, missing, or deceased.
It also said it continues to receive requests for assistance related to ongoing court proceedings, as well as requests to obtain documents needed to establish migrants’ identities and their family ties.
The association also expressed concern over the cases of several Moroccan nationals who remain detained or held in Libya.
The latest handover comes amid continued efforts to return Moroccan nationals detained or stranded in Algeria after attempting to reach Europe.
The Oujda-Maghnia border crossing, also known as Zouj Bghal, has been used for previous handovers of Moroccan nationals from Algeria. The two countries have maintained closed land borders since 1994, making the crossing a key point for humanitarian transfers and repatriation operations.
Moroccan migrant assistance groups have documented cases of Moroccan nationals detained in Algeria or unable to return home, while also calling for greater coordination to identify missing migrants and assist their families.
The AMSV said it would continue monitoring these cases and following requests for intervention from migrants and their families.
