King Mohammed VI, Amir Al-Mouminine, on Monday chaired a religious ceremony at the Royal Palace in Rabat to mark Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi, the annual commemoration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed.
The ceremony, held on August 24, brought together Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid, and Prince Moulay Ahmed, alongside senior government officials, ulema, diplomats, and military and civilian representatives.
The gathering featured Quranic recitations and traditional panegyrics honoring the Prophet, reflecting the prominent place of Mawlid in Morocco’s religious life.
Morocco highlights its prophetic heritage
Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq used the occasion to review the work of the Higher Council of Ulema and local councils over the past year.
His remarks centered in particular on initiatives launched following the King’s call last year to commemorate the 15th century since the birth of Prophet Mohammed.
Throughout the year, religious gatherings were held across Morocco to honor the Prophet and revisit the moral principles associated with his teachings. Toufiq presented these activities as part of Morocco’s longstanding religious tradition, which combines scholarly work with popular expressions of devotion.
The minister pointed to the writings of prominent Moroccan scholars, including Cadi Ayyad and Abu Al-Abbas Al-Ozfi, as well as Imam Al-Jazouli’s “Dalail Al-Khayrat.” He described these works as part of a broader Moroccan intellectual and spiritual legacy centered on knowledge of and devotion to the Prophet.
Religious guidance
Toufiq also pointed to the role of Moroccan ulema in translating the ethical dimension of the Prophet’s teachings into contemporary religious guidance.
Under the “Tassdid Tabligh” communication plan, scholars have sought to present religious teachings in a clear and accessible manner, with particular emphasis on the moral implications of monotheism.
The minister said this approach encourages people to move beyond individual and collective forms of selfishness and toward a more constructive practice of religion grounded in personal responsibility and social reform.
The emphasis places religious observance alongside its broader ethical purpose, linking faith with conduct and the way individuals relate to one another.
King receives historic Moroccan religious work
The ceremony also featured the presentation of a newly published Arabic-language edition of “Dakhirat Al Muhtaj Fi Assalati Ala Sahibi Alliwae Wa Taj” to King Mohammed VI.
Published by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, the work was compiled with reference to dozens of manuscripts held in royal, public, and private collections in Morocco and abroad.
The publication forms part of a broader initiative launched at the King’s direction to revive and make accessible Morocco’s religious heritage as part of the commemoration of the 15th century since the Prophet’s birth.
The initiative places particular attention on Moroccan works devoted to prayers upon the Prophet and the scholarship developed around Mawlid and prophetic devotion.
A tradition maintained by the Alaouite dynasty
The King’s participation in the ceremony reflects a tradition observed by Morocco’s Alaouite rulers, who have historically marked the Prophet’s birth through religious gatherings.
For Morocco, Eid Al Mawlid is not only a religious anniversary but also an occasion to revisit a longstanding cultural and scholarly heritage. The celebration places renewed emphasis on the values associated with the Prophet’s message, including mercy, justice, good conduct, peaceful coexistence, and solidarity.
The ceremony in Rabat brought together the country’s political, religious, diplomatic, and military leadership, reflecting the continued significance of the occasion within Morocco’s public and religious life.
