Rabat – King Mohammed VI has granted a Royal pardon to 634 people convicted by various courts across Morocco, the Ministry of Justice announced Monday on the occasion of Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi.
According to the ministry, the pardon covers individuals both in detention and at liberty, with measures ranging from full or partial reductions of prison sentences to the remission of fines.
Of the beneficiaries, 462 were serving prison or custodial sentences at the time of the decision.
The Royal pardon grants a reduction of the remaining prison or custodial sentence to 13 detainees, while 449 others received a remission of their prison or custodial sentences.
The ministry said the beneficiaries include 15 detainees convicted in cases related to extremism and terrorism. Their inclusion followed their formal expression of commitment to Morocco’s national constants and sacred values, as well as to the country’s institutions.
They had also reviewed their ideological positions and rejected extremist and terrorist views, according to the ministry.
Of these 15 detainees, nine benefited from a reduction of their remaining custodial sentences, while six received a remission of their custodial sentences.
The Royal pardon also covers 157 people who were already at liberty.
Among them, 28 benefited from a pardon covering their prison sentence or the remaining portion of it, while 13 received a remission of their prison sentence while retaining the associated fine.
A further 112 people were granted remission of their fines, and four benefited from a pardon covering both their prison sentences and fines.
The Royal pardon was issued as part of the observance of Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi, which marks the birth of Prophet Mohammed.
Royal pardons are traditionally granted on major religious and national occasions in Morocco, benefiting individuals convicted under different circumstances and forms of sentence.
The Ministry of Justice concluded its announcement by expressing wishes for the continued protection and prosperity of King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, and all members of the Royal Family.
