Agadir – Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has officially launched a regional explosives unit in Agadir as part of efforts to strengthen security preparedness and specialized response capabilities.
The DGSN launched the Regional Explosives Unit, known as the “Brigade Régionale des Artificiers,” under the Agadir Security Directorate today.
The unit is the eighth of its kind in Morocco, following those established under the security prefectures of Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Tangier, Oujda, Marrakech, and Laayoune.
The establishment of the unit forms part of the DGSN’s ongoing programs to strengthen decentralized security structures and develop their capabilities in dealing with risks associated with explosive materials and devices.
The new unit will carry out preventive searches and surveillance operations at venues hosting major sporting, artistic, and social events. It will also handle suspicious objects and materials as a precautionary measure.
In addition, the unit will support judicial investigations by providing specialized expertise for the examination and analysis of explosives and explosive devices.
To prepare personnel for these responsibilities, the DGSN trained a new generation of national security officers through specialized programs supervised by trainers from the Central Explosives Unit.
The training was conducted in two phases. The first covered basic principles for handling explosives, while the second focused on using explosives-handling equipment in different scenarios involving the neutralization of explosive devices.
The Agadir unit has been equipped with the necessary technical and logistical resources, including a specially equipped vehicle for transporting, storing, and deploying explosives-handling equipment.
It also has a light vehicle for personnel transportation and daily operations, as well as IT and logistical equipment for administrative and operational needs.
The DGSN said the creation of the unit reflects its approach of strengthening specialized security services and establishing professional structures capable of responding to security challenges related to explosives.
The initiative is also part of the DGSN’s broader efforts to expand specialized security units nationwide through a gradual rollout aimed at improving intervention capabilities and providing specialized security services.
