Rabat – Moroccan authorities have opened an investigation after a police officer at Tanger Med Port allegedly helped pass a 13-kilogram shipment of cannabis resin to a traveler bound for Europe.
According to converging reports, the case came to light on September 17, when police at the port stopped a utility vehicle whose driver had already completed the required border checks before boarding a ferry to Europe.
A search uncovered 13 kilograms of cannabis resin, prompting authorities to examine how the drugs had reached the driver after he passed through the port’s security controls.
Security-camera footage provided a key lead in the investigation. According to the findings cited by authorities, the driver received the shipment after he had cleared security and reached the ferry terminal.
Investigators identified the alleged supplier as a police officer assigned to Tanger Med Port. Authorities arrested the officer, who holds the rank of police brigadier, in connection with the case.
The Tangier regional judicial police formally opened a judicial investigation on September 19 under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor. Both the driver and the police officer remain in custody as investigators work to establish the full circumstances of the alleged smuggling attempt.
Authorities are also examining whether other people took part in the operation and whether the case has links to wider drug-trafficking networks inside or outside Morocco.
Searches and arrests are expected to continue as investigators seek to identify any additional suspects and trace assets that may have resulted from the alleged criminal activity.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has separately suspended the police officer from duty on a temporary basis. The measure will remain in place until the judicial process concludes and authorities determine whether he faces disciplinary action.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against both suspects remain subject to the outcome of the judicial proceedings.
