Rabat – Peru has expressed willingness to open a consulate in Morocco’s Dakhla, with the representation aimed at serving as a platform for access to African markets for Peruvian products.
Peru announced the decision in a joint statement following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and his counterpart Carlos Espa y Garces-Alvear, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
In the statement, Peru also renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty over its southern provinces.
Peru also supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a political, just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution to the dispute.
Peru said it is willing to open a consulate in Dakhla to serve as a platform for access to African markets, stressing support for the UN Security Council Resolution 2797 of October 2025.
The resolution, according to Peru, gave new momentum to the process of settling the regional dispute over the Sahara, based on the aforementioned Moroccan initiative.
The announcement followed a pledge by Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori in July to support Morocco’s territorial integrity.
The president’s office, following her election, emphasized its commitment to supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity, backing Resolution 2797, which recognizes Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a genuine political basis for resolving the dispute.
Following her election, King Mohammed VI extended his warm congratulations, expressing his determination to work closely with the Peruvian president to give fresh momentum to bilateral ties.
Peru suspended relations with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 2023, citing that the decision is in accordance with the rules of international law.
Peru also reiterated its willingness to continue supporting all efforts aimed at achieving a just, sustainable, and usually acceptable political solution.
