Agadir – Morocco and Indonesia are seeking to expand their bilateral partnership by strengthening economic, tourism, cultural, academic, and parliamentary cooperation.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment during a meeting Thursday in Jakarta between Indonesia’s People’s Consultative Assembly Chairman Ahmad Muzani and Morocco’s Ambassador to Indonesia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Redouane Houssaini.
Muzani stressed the importance of turning the longstanding friendship between Morocco and Indonesia into concrete and mutually beneficial partnerships across areas of common interest.
The Indonesian official welcomed Houssaini’s invitation to visit Morocco in 2027, an initiative that could help reinforce parliamentary cooperation and institutional exchanges between the two countries.
For his part, Houssaini highlighted the historical and human ties between Morocco and Indonesia, as well as the strong political relations between the two countries.
He called for further development of these relations in the economic and trade sectors, pointing to the complementary nature of the two economies.
The Moroccan ambassador also encouraged greater direct contact between Moroccan and Indonesian business operators to create new partnerships and expand bilateral trade opportunities.
Tourism and cultural cooperation
Tourism emerged as another area with potential for stronger cooperation, particularly through cultural and spiritual tourism.
The two sides noted growing interest among Indonesian visitors in Moroccan destinations with strong historical and spiritual significance, including Fez and Marrakech.
Morocco and Indonesia also discussed opportunities to expand cultural and academic exchanges. The two officials pointed to the presence of Indonesian students in Moroccan higher education institutions as an important channel for strengthening people-to-people ties and developing human capital.
The latest discussions build on Morocco’s recent efforts to expand its economic engagement with Indonesia and ASEAN. In July, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira held talks in Jakarta with Indonesian business representatives and ASEAN officials on investment, trade, regional value chains, green economy initiatives, and logistics connectivity.
Morocco and Indonesia also discussed cooperation on halal certification, while the two sides explored opportunities in sectors including agri-food, fertilizers, energy, renewable energy, logistics, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.
