Rabat – Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee while playing for France against Turkey, leaving his return date dependent on his recovery.
The Spanish club announced the diagnosis on Saturday after Mbappe underwent medical tests following his return from international duty.
“After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by Real Madrid’s Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee,” the club said, adding that his condition remains subject to further evaluation.
Real Madrid did not specify how long the forward will be sidelined.
Mbappe leaves France camp
Mbappe sustained the injury during France’s 1-0 win away to Turkey on Friday in their opening UEFA Nations League match.
The Real Madrid forward scored the game’s only goal in the 54th minute before experiencing pain in his left knee and being substituted shortly afterward.
The setback brought an early end to his September international window, with Mbappe leaving the France camp and returning to Madrid for further medical assessment. He is therefore set to miss France’s remaining fixtures during the current break.
The injury came during Zinedine Zidane’s first match in charge of France after succeeding Didier Deschamps following the 2026 World Cup.
Reports point to a 10-12 day absence
Although Real Madrid have not announced an official recovery timetable, Spanish outlets AS and Marca estimate that Mbappe could be unavailable for around 10 to 12 days.
Such a timeframe would potentially allow the 27-year-old to return when Real Madrid resume club competition following the international break, provided his recovery develops as expected.
Mbappe’s injury will now be monitored closely by Real Madrid’s medical staff before a decision is made on when he can resume training and competitive action.
