Rabat – King Mohammed VI will preside over the opening of the first session of the first legislative year of Morocco’s 12th Legislature on Friday, October 9, the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol, and Chancellery announced Thursday.
The opening session will take place at the Parliament building, according to a statement from the ministry.
During the session, the King will deliver a speech before members of both chambers of Parliament: the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors.
The Royal Speech will be broadcast live on radio and television starting at 3:45 p.m. local time, the ministry said.
Morocco held its legislative elections on September 23, with voters electing all 395 members of the House of Representatives.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) emerged as the largest political force, securing 97 seats, followed by the National Rally of Independents (RNI) with 66 seats and the Istiqlal Party with 65. The Justice and Development Party (PJD), which suffered a major setback in the 2021 elections, made a comeback with 54 seats.
The elections recorded a voter turnout of 38.02%, compared with 50.35% in 2021. The new legislature will oversee the final years of major national projects, including preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, alongside government efforts to address employment, public services, and other socioeconomic priorities.
No party secured a majority in the 395-member House of Representatives, making coalition-building necessary for the formation of the new government.
Under Morocco’s constitutional framework, the King appoints the Head of Government from the political party that comes first in the legislative elections.
King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Zahra El Mansouri as Head of Government, making her the first woman to hold the position in Morocco.
