Morocco’s overall score was below the global average of 63.5 points.

Rabat – Morocco ranked 85th out of 161 countries in the 2025 Global Capitalism Index, scoring 61.8 out of 100, according to a new index developed by researchers at the University of Virginia in the United States.

The ranking places Morocco ninth among African countries included in the index, behind Benin, which ranked 80th globally with a score of 62.8, and ahead of Egypt, which ranked 86th with 60.9 points.

The Global Capitalism Index measures how well countries support market-based economic activity through their institutions and policies. Researchers assess eight areas, including market competition, banking stability, property rights, labor market openness, the movement of goods and capital, and the creation and growth of businesses.

The index draws on 213 datasets from sources including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and academic research. Its latest edition covers economic and institutional conditions through 2025.

Morocco’s overall score was below the global average of 63.5 points. Its position reflects differences in how countries support businesses, investment and competition, rather than measuring their overall wealth or economic growth.

Switzerland topped the global ranking with 96.9 points, followed by the United States with 95 points. Hong Kong ranked third with 94.5 points, while Canada and Singapore took fourth and fifth place, scoring 93.8 and 93.3 points, respectively.

Luxembourg, Denmark, Australia, Sweden and Norway completed the top 10.

Among other major economies, the United Kingdom ranked 12th with 90.1 points, while France placed 21st with 85.2 points. China ranked 33rd with 79 points, ahead of India, which placed 94th with 59.1 points.

In Africa, Mauritius ranked 48th globally with 73.9 points, followed by Seychelles at 50th with 73.4 points. Botswana ranked 52nd with 72.7 points, while South Africa placed 78th with 63.2 points.

At the bottom of the global ranking, Venezuela ranked last with 8.9 points, preceded by Libya at 21.8 points and Chad at 24.1 points.

The researchers say the index does not define capitalism simply as the absence of government intervention. Instead, it considers whether institutions protect property rights, support competition, and allow markets to function while limiting constraints from both public and private actors.

The index was developed by the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy and Darden School of Business.
