Rabat – Morocco’s national futsal team secured an emphatic 7-0 victory over Zambia today in their second Group A match of the 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), strengthening their campaign to defend the continental title on home soil.
The match, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Hall in Rabat, saw Hicham Dguig’s side continue their impressive start to the tournament with another convincing result.
Morocco entered the encounter following a 4-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match on Monday, when Youssef Jouad scored a hat-trick and Younes Mkasri added another goal.
The latest victory takes Morocco’s tally to six points from two matches, with 11 goals scored and none conceded, underlining the team’s attacking strength and defensive consistency.
Morocco continue their title defense
The Atlas Lions entered the competition as three-time defending champions, having won the African title in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
Their most recent triumph came in 2024, when they defeated Angola 5-1 in the final to secure their third consecutive continental crown.
Playing in front of their home supporters, Morocco are now seeking a fourth straight title, which would further strengthen their position as Africa’s dominant futsal nation.
Wednesday’s result was particularly significant given Zambia’s winning start to the tournament. The southern African side had defeated Libya 3-1 in their opening Group A fixture, with Patrick Mwila scoring twice.
Morocco will conclude their group-stage campaign against Libya on Friday, October 16, at 8 p.m. at the same venue in Rabat.
The tournament runs until October 21, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semifinals.
The 7-0 win also secures Morocco’s place in the semifinals with one group match remaining. Algeria and Libya drew 2-2 earlier on Wednesday, leaving both teams on one point and unable to catch Morocco’s six-point total.
