Morocco Ranks 47th in Global Hunger Index With Low Hunger Level

Rabat – Morocco ranked 47th out of 122 in the 2026 Global Hunger Index (GHI), with a score of 9.0, placing the country in the index’s low hunger category.

The report’s country profile shows Morocco’s score compares with 12.5 for West Asia and North Africa and 18.1 globally.

The report also sheds light on Morocco’s efforts in reducing child stunting, with the share of children under five affected by the condition falling from 25.3% in 2000 to 13.7%. The number represents a decrease of 11.6 percentage points.

The GHI assesses hunger at the global, regional, and national levels through four indicators: undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting, and under-five mortality. Together, these measures provide a broader picture of food insecurity and national challenges across countries.

Armenia tops the list with a score of 5, reflecting a low level of hunger. Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, and Chile share second place.

Somalia, Burundi, South Sudan, and Yemen are all ranked 122nd, with an alarming level of hunger.

In Sudan, child wasting affects 18.1% of children under five, while child stunting affects 35.4%, and under-five mortality is 6.2%.

In South Sudan, the situation has also been provisionally designated as alarming, with undernourishment affecting 19.1% of the population. Child stunting affects 30.3% of children under five, and under-five mortality is 9.7%.

In Burundi, meanwhile, the level of hunger has been provisionally designated as alarming this year, with child stunting affecting 55.3% of children under five.

Meanwhile, the level of hunger in Yemen has also been designated as alarming, with child wasting affecting 16.8% of children under five, while child stunting affects 47.4% and under-five mortality is 3.8%.

While millions of children face hunger and malnutrition, households across the world continue to waste billions of meals every day.

A United Nations report found that households across all continents wasted over one billion meals per day in 2022, while 783 million people were affected by hunger and a third of humanity faced food insecurity.

“Food waste continues to hurt the global economy and fuel climate change, nature loss, and pollution,” the UN report said.
