Morocco Prison Administration Denies Concealing Inmate’s Hunger Strike

Rabat — Morocco’s General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) on Thursday denied allegations that it had concealed a hunger strike by an inmate at El Jadida 2 Local Prison and prevented her mother from visiting her.

In a clarification statement, the delegation said the inmate, identified by the initials S.A., was receiving the same rights as other female prisoners.

The DGAPR described claims that the inmate had been on a hunger strike for 10 days and that prison authorities had concealed it as false.

It said the inmate submitted a notice of her intention to begin a hunger strike on October 12, 2026. The prison administration informed the competent authorities and her family immediately after receiving the notice, according to the statement.

The delegation added that medical staff were monitoring her health.

Regarding the visit, the DGAPR said the inmate’s mother arrived at the prison on October 14, 2026, but the inmate refused to go to the visiting room without giving a reason.

The statement also said the inmate had not contacted her family since October 7, 2026, by her own choice. It added that prison authorities allowed her to use the telephone several times a week.

The inmate enjoyed the same rights as other female prisoners and was staying in a single-occupancy room at her own request, the delegation stressed.

She had not been subjected to provocation or incitement, it added, detailing that the inmate sometimes engaged in provocative behavior toward female staff and fellow inmates, including verbal insults and causing noise.
