Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level weather alert warning of locally heavy thunderstorms and hail in several provinces on Monday.
The directorate expects rainfall of between 30 and 45 millimeters in the provinces of Tetouan, Fahs-Anjra, Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Nador, Driouch, and M’diq-Fnideq.
The warning will remain in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday.
The same weather conditions are expected to affect El Hajeb, Moulay Yacoub, Khemisset, Meknes, Sidi Kacem, Ifrane, Fez, Berkane, Figuig, Errachidia, Larache, Sefrou, Tangier-Assilah, Midelt, and Boulemane during the same period, with rainfall ranging from 20 to 30 millimeters.
The warning comes as Morocco continues to experience unstable weather, with heavy rainfall recently triggering flash floods in several parts of the country.
Recent floods cause deaths and damage
Last week, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across parts of southern and southeastern Morocco, sweeping away vehicles, damaging roads, and disrupting transport.
At least two people died in separate incidents involving vehicles caught in floodwaters, according to local reports. Three foreign tourists were also rescued after their vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded section of road in the Ait Saoun area, between Ouarzazate and Agdz.
The storms also affected parts of the High Atlas Mountains, including Al Haouz province, where floodwaters damaged roads and carried vehicles along their path.
Videos circulating online showed water rushing across roads and rocks falling onto mountain routes.
The recent incidents have highlighted the dangers of sudden flooding, particularly in mountainous areas where heavy rain can cause water levels to rise quickly and debris to fall onto roads.
The DGM’s orange-level alert indicates potentially dangerous weather conditions that require increased vigilance.
