Rabat– Morocco’s House of Representatives on Thursday formally granted confidence to the government led by Head of Government Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, with 204 lawmakers voting in favor of its government program and 127 voting against.
A total of 331 MPs took part in the vote, giving the government the absolute majority required under Article 88 of Morocco’s Constitution for the government to be formally invested.
The vote completes the constitutional process for the newly formed government, which is led by the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) and includes the Istiqlal Party, the Party of Progress and Socialism, and the Socialist Union of Popular Forces.
Under Article 88, the government is considered formally installed after securing the confidence of the House of Representatives through an absolute majority vote in favor of its government program.
The vote followed several days of parliamentary debate over the priorities and commitments outlined in the government program. Majority groups stressed the program’s strong social dimension and called for its commitments to be translated into concrete measures with a tangible impact on citizens’ lives.
Government supporters also emphasized the need to address economic and social pressures, including rising living costs, while improving purchasing power and ensuring greater efficiency in the implementation of public policies.
Before the government’s response, majority parliamentary groups had called for addressing what they described as shortcomings and abuses from the previous period. Their priorities included tackling rising prices, conflicts of interest and corruption, strengthening purchasing power, and expanding the political and rights environment.
El Mansouri also defended the composition of the governing majority, arguing that it should not be viewed simply as a numerical coalition. She said the parties making up the majority share common ground in terms of their programs, political references and ideological orientations.
With Thursday’s vote, the government has formally secured the confidence of the House of Representatives and fulfilled the constitutional requirement for its installation.
