Taroudant -Qatar’s former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani suffered an injury and broke his leg while on holiday in Morocco. He was flown to Switzerland for emergency surgery last weekend, according to a government statement.
According to Doha News, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, 63, broke his leg while during a vacation with his family at Ifrane ski resort in the Atlas Mountains.
The same source added that an official from the Qatari Government Communications Office confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“On Saturday December 26, His Highness the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani was flown to Zurich, Switzerland for emergency treatment after suffering a broken leg while on holiday,” the government statement said.
“Following a successful operation, his Highness the Father Emir is currently in Zurich recovering and undergoing physiotherapy treatment,” it added.
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the fifth son of of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and brother of the Qatar’s current Emir, , took to Twitter to reassure Qataris that his father’s surgery was successful.
“For anyone who’s asking about the father Emir, he’s good and well praise God. He broke his leg and had surgery and now is in the physical therapy phase…thanks for asking,” Sheikh Joaan wrote on his Twitter account.

on Saturday, photo of the Emir of the State of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani wearing ‘dejellaba’, Morocco’s traditional outfit, in Ifrane went viral garnering thousands of likes and comments on social media networks.
Sheikh Hamad served as Emir of Qatar for 18 years, from 1995 until he handed power over to his fourth son Sheikh Tamim in June 2013.
