Rabat – Moroccan authorities busted on Friday a nine-member terrorist cell linked to the so-called Islamic state (ISIS). The terrorist cell was plotting to carry out terrorist attacks in Morocco.

The Central Bureau of judiciary investigations, an arm of the Moroccan national territory surveillance department, busted this Friday a “dangerous” terrorist cell, comprising nine supporters of the Islamic State group who were active in several Moroccan cities and villages (Kenitra, Sale, Kasbah Tadla, Douar Ghram Laalam, Ait Ishaq).

The police investigations revealed that the cell members, followers of Daesh’s bloody methods, were in an advanced stage of planning and preparing a dangerous terrorist project that aimed to endanger the Kingdom stability and sow terror among citizens, the interior ministry said in a release

The individuals were also found to be planning to join the “Islamic State” (ISIS) organization in the Syrian-Iraqi zone or in Libya and have allegedly received instructions from this terrorist organization to identify strategic facilities and sites in some Moroccan cities to carry out attacks with firearms and explosive devices, in accordance with ISIS strategy to expand beyond the areas already under its control, the source further explains.

The ring members had close links with Moroccan Daesh fighters in Syria and Libya and were seeking to obtain the logistical support needed for their terror plans.

Firearms and ammunition, edged weapons and hatchets were seized in Kenitra by the police, which also found pamphlets calling for Jihad and making the apology of the “Islamic State” organization and drawings of the terrorist organization flag.

The cell members will be referred to justice after completion of the investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent general prosecutor.
