Rabat – Belgian coach Hugo Broos has stepped down as South Africa’s national team manager following the country’s historic campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to AFP, the 74-year-old ends his tenure after leading Bafana Bafana to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history. South Africa reached the Round of 16 before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Canada.
A South African Football Association official told AFP that Broos could remain involved with the national team in a different capacity.
“Hugo can continue working with the national team, but in a different role,” the official said, adding that the federation has received several applications for the head coach position, with Pitso Mosimane among the candidates.
Broos also confirmed his departure to Belgian magazine Humo, revealing that South African FA president Danny Jordaan has asked him to stay on as an adviser or consultant.
The Belgian coach, who took charge in 2021, transformed South Africa into one of Africa’s most competitive national teams. During the 2026 World Cup, Bafana Bafana finished second in their group behind Mexico after defeating South Korea 1-0 to secure a historic place in the knockout rounds.
Beyond the World Cup, Broos also guided South Africa to a third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, cementing his legacy with the national team.
Former South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane is widely considered one of the favorites to succeed Broos. Since his previous spell with the national team, Mosimane has enjoyed major success at club level, winning three CAF Champions League titles with Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC.
