Rabat – Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has donated his personal Mercedes-Benz car last Saturday in Marrakech at a fundraising Gala dinner. The proceeds of the gala will be going towards the construction of two hospitals for cancer patients.
A report by daily Akhbar Alyaoum said King Mohammed VI donated his convertible Mercedes (model of 1970) for the charity auction during the fundraising gala dinner held in Marrakech last Saturday.
The car was bought by Morocco’s richest man Othman Benjelloun for an estimate of MAD 20 million. Othman Benjelloun is the CEO of BMCE Bank, one of Morocco’s largest banks.
The wife of King Mohamed VI, Lalla Salma also donated custom made jewelry at the charity auction, which was sold for an estimated MAD 12 million.
The event was organized by the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention, headed by Princess Lalla Salma. The foundation seeks to raise funds for a new regional cancer center in Laayoune and construct an oncology center in Béni Mellal.
Entitled ‘A Donation For Life,” the gala dinner was attended by over 500 Moroccan and international celebrities. The funds collected at the event reached MAD 150 million, which should suffice to build the two hospitals.
Delivering a speech at the event, Lalla Salma extended her thanks to King Mohammed, saying that “the various achievements of the foundation would not have been possible without his generous support.’’
Last week, the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention and Treatment celebrated its 10th anniversary.
The foundation was created in 2005 at the initiative of Princess Lalla Salma and has been dedicated to improving medical care for patients and encouraging preventive measures, such as screening.
