King Mohammed VI congratulated Donald Trump on his historic re-election as President of the United States, expressing hope for further strengthened relations between Morocco and the US.

Trump won the presidential election with 279 electoral votes, and observers expect more votes to join in favor of the US President– who secured 28 states against 18 for Democrat candidate Kamala Harris.

In his message, King Mohammed VI expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Trump on his election, saying that this victory is a testament to his patriotism and a confirmation of his ongoing commitment to defend the supreme interests of the US, Morocco’s longtime friend and ally.

“The values we share and our common interests across a broad range of sectors have allowed us to work together consistently to build a better future for our peoples, making our relationship a driving force for peace, security, and prosperity in the Middle East, Africa, and beyond,” the monarch said in his message.

In his message, the monarch recalled Trump’s historic decision to recognize Morocco’s complete sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.

This decision remains a memorable act for which Morocco will be “forever grateful,” the monarch said, adding that the move marked a milestone and a turning point that reflects the true depth of the special and longstanding ties between the two countries.

“As we face increasingly complex regional and global challenges, the Kingdom of Morocco will, more than ever, remain a true friend and faithful ally of the United States,” the King said, stressing his determination and keenness to work closely with President Trump to further promote shared interests and strengthen the unique US-Morocco alliance at all levels of cooperation.

Trump recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara in December 2020.

“The United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the entire Western Sahara territory and reaffirms its support for Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory,” the White House said then.

“Morocco recognized the United States in 1777. It is thus fitting that we recognize their sovereignty over the Western Sahara,” Trump said as he announced signing a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara.

Trump’s re-election comes  as Rabat commemorates the 49th anniversary of the Green March – a milestone in Morocco’s history and efforts against attempts at undermining its territorial integrity.

The King will deliver a speech tonight to celebrate this historic event and give some indications of Morocco’s vision for the Sahara as more countries embrace its Autonomy Plan as the most viable path to lasting resolution of the long-running territorial dispute.

In a speech last month, the monarch recalled the ever-deepening momentum in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region, citing recognition from France, Spain, the US, and as well as the support of most countries in Africa, the Arab World, and Europe.

“We have been able to secure the recognition of influential countries which are permanent members of the Security Council, such as the United States of America and France,” the monarch said.
