Rabat— Morocco has secured a significant role in the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG) by being elected to its steering committee during the ongoing Rome Water Dialogue, which is part of the World Food Forum (WFF) that took place earlier this week.
This election highlights Morocco’s representation of the African region in this vital global initiative, which addresses the pressing issue of water scarcity in agricultural practices worldwide.
Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the Rome Water Dialogue aims to tackle the urgent challenges posed by water scarcity.
Youssef Balla, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to UN agencies in Rome, emphasized that this election reflected international recognition of King Mohammed VI’s vision for effective water resource management and improved food security.
In its new position on the WASAG steering committee, Morocco is set to influence strategic initiatives focused on mitigating water scarcity in agriculture, a critical issue affecting many nations across Africa.
The kingdom plans to leverage its expertise in sustainable water resource management to foster international collaboration in addressing the global water crisis.
As part of its responsibilities, Morocco will oversee the approval of international recommendations and work to mobilize essential political and financial support to meet the objectives of the initiative.

During his opening remarks at the High-Level Water Dialogue, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu praised Morocco’s efforts, highlighting the leadership of King Mohammed VI in water management.
He noted the significant role the Sovereign plays in crafting public policies aimed at enhancing the resilience of the national economy amid the escalating water challenges.
The Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture, established during COP 22 in Marrakech in November 2016, continues to serve as a crucial resource for nations grappling with water scarcity issues.
The adoption of the Rome Declaration by ministers and heads of delegations at the World Food Forum represents a unified commitment among partners to strengthen collaboration and mobilize necessary resources to address the devastating impacts of the water crisis on agriculture.
