Rabat, March 2, 2012

After the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Thursday, Mr. Mustapha Khalfi, Minister of Communication and spokesperson of the Benkirane government, issued a statement to the press about the publication of a list of transportation licensees.

As Mr. Khalfi indicated that the decision of Mr. Abdul Aziz al-Rabah, Moroccan Minister of Equipment and Transport, to publish the secretive list, is a fulfillment of a campaign promise.  He added that, “this initiative comes in the context of efforts being made by the government to enshrine the right of access to information and activate the principle of good governance and transparency in granting licenses and privileges”.

Mr. Khalfi further added that the announcement, made on Thursday March 1, was an example of the government’s effort to bring about a holistic and harmonious reform.

As for the controversy regarding the latest issue of Le Monde, which included an article about King Mohamed VI, Mr. Khalfi reiterated that “the Ministry of Communication has no intention of banning the last issue of the Le Monde”.  Drawing a distinction, Mr. Khalfi explained that “there is a big difference between the way El Pais dealt with the King in its article and the way le Monde depicted him”.

Mr. Khalfi also indicated that Morocco is aligned with the spirit of the Arab initiative on Syria and stressed that Morocco would raise the position of the Arab initiative at the UN as it is the only Arab country represented at the Security Council.  “Morocco will give priority to stopping the violence and bloodshed in Syria, before promoting any other step,”, he added.
