Rabat – King Mohammed VI has extended congratulations to Joseph Aoun, the newly-elected president of Lebanon.
In a message on Friday, the Moroccan monarch expressed his warmest congratulations to General Aoun, commending the trust the new president earned in the presidential election.
“I hope that this significant national event will be a gain for the democratic process and a strong catalyst for consolidating the path of harmony and reconciliation among all the components of your esteemed people, and for safeguarding its sovereignty and national unity,” the King said in his message.
He also reaffirmed Morocco’s solidarity and support for the Lebanese people, renewing his strong commitment to working with Lebanon to strengthen the bonds of sincere “brotherhood and constructive cooperation” between the two countries.
The King also emphasized the need to elevate ties to meet “the aspirations of our two peoples for further progress and prosperity.”
Lebanon’s parliament elected Aoun as the new president on Thursday. The election ended a 26-month political vacuum that had left the crisis-hit nation without a head of state since October 2022.
The elections also come amid a brawling situation in the Middle East, including Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.
Israeli occupation forces also targeted Lebanon, claiming that its massacres specifically targeted resistance groups – including Hezbollah. Hezbollah and Israel reached a ceasefire agreement in November. The agreement stipulates that IOF should leave Lebanon by January 26.
On January 6, US envoy Amos Hochstein said IOF would withdraw completely from south Lebanon.
“The Israeli military started its withdrawal from Naqoura, most of the western sector, and back into Israel proper today, south of the Blue Line,” Hochstein told reporters in Beirut, adding that the withdrawals will continue until IOF are totally out of Lebanon completely.
