Rabat – Over 70 international media organizations, including prominent outlets such as CNN, the BBC, Agence France-Presse, and the Associated Press, have collectively called on Israel to lift restrictions on foreign media access to Gaza. The media groups issued an open letter urging Israeli authorities to allow independent reporting from the war-torn region.
Organized by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the letter emphasized the critical role of a free and independent press in democracy and highlighted the difficulties faced by local journalists in Gaza. It noted that nine months into the war on Gaza, international reporters are still largely barred from entering the strip, except for occasional, closely supervised trips arranged by the Israeli forces.
“This effective ban on foreign reporting has placed an impossible and unreasonable burden on local reporters to document a war through which they are living,” the letter reads.
The signatories argue that the lack of independent reporting makes it increasingly difficult to obtain reliable information from Gaza, and the reports that do emerge are frequently questioned for their accuracy.

Since the war began, more than 100 journalists have lost their lives, and those continuing to work in Gaza face “conditions of extreme deprivation,” the letter added.
“The result is that information from Gaza is becoming harder and harder to obtain and that the reporting which does get through is subject to repeated questions over its veracity,” it stressed.
The media groups, which also include major newspapers like The Financial Times, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, as well as US television networks ABC, CBS, and NBC, stressed their understanding of the inherent risks in war reporting.
“A free and independent press is the cornerstone of democracy,” the letter emphasizes. It concludes with a call for Israel to honor its international obligations to protect journalists as civilians and to provide immediate, unrestricted access to Gaza for foreign media.
