Marrakech – A food poisoning incident on Thursday morning at a fast-food restaurant in Martil, M’diq-Fnideq Prefecture, sent shockwaves through the community as more than 20 people, including children, were rushed to local hospitals.

The victims, who had consumed meals at the local fast-food restaurant, experienced symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and severe headaches before seeking medical attention.

According to converging reports, the emergency department at Martil’s day clinic was overwhelmed with patients presenting symptoms of food poisoning, arriving in successive waves from the early hours of the day.

All victims received necessary treatment and were discharged shortly after. However, health authorities have not ruled out the possibility of new cases emerging in the coming hours, given the nature of the poisoning.

In response to the incident, local authorities immediately launched a preliminary investigation and ordered the temporary closure of the restaurant until the completion of the investigation.

The victims unanimously identified a well-known fast-food restaurant in the region as the source of the poisoning, prompting swift action from the authorities.

The food poisoning incident in Martil comes on the heels of a similar case in Marrakech earlier this year.

Marrakech Court delivered on Monday its verdict in a deadly food poisoning case that claimed the lives of six people in May. The owner of the restaurant responsible for the fatal poisoning was sentenced to four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and negligence, along with a fine of MAD 1,000 ($100). The same penalty was imposed on the owner’s two assistants.
