Marrakech – The passing of Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of King Mohammed VI, has prompted an outpouring of condolences from world leaders and prominent figures. The 78-year-old princess, widow of the late King Hassan II, passed away on Saturday.

One such offer of condolences came from Israel, whose relations with the North African country are marked by tensions amidst their deadly war on Gaza.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, took to social media on Sunday to express his condolences. “On behalf of myself and my wife Sarah, I send my deepest condolences on the passing of the mother of the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, Lalla Latifa,” he wrote.

“The people of Israel stand with the King and his family in their mourning, wishing them patience and peace.”

Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Israel Katz, echoed these sentiments, stating, “It is with deep sadness and great sorrow that we learned of the passing of the mother of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. We ask God to cover the deceased with His vast mercy and welcome her into His vast paradise.”

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Egypt, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, also expressed his sympathies on Saturday evening through the official social media account of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.

The statement read, “the Sheikh of Al-Azhar expresses with deep sadness his condolences following the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, King of the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco.”

He added a prayer, asking God to “cover the deceased with His vast mercy and welcome her among the righteous.”

President of the Transition and Head of State of Gabon, Brice Oligui Nguema, also presented his condolences on behalf of the Gabonese people. “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Her Royal Highness, Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” he wrote.

“On behalf of the Gabonese people, the Government and in my own name, we address our sincere condolences and our solidarity to the Royal Family.”

Princess Lalla Latifa, affectionately known as the “Mother of the Royal Children,” played a significant, albeit private, role in the Moroccan royal family.

Her passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and sympathy from leaders around the world, a testament to the respect and esteem in which she and the Moroccan royal family are held.
