Rabat – Jordan demands an international investigation into Israel’s numerous war crimes committed during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said today.

Speaking at a press conference with the head of the UN Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA), Safadi emphasized the necessity of bringing to justice those responsible for documented war crimes.

An Israeli airstrike in Nuseirat, central Gaza, killed 20 people, mostly women and children, as fighting continued to rage across northern Gaza on Sunday. Now in its eighth month, the war has also exposed divisions among Israel’s leaders over the future governance of Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced criticism from his War Cabinet. His main political rival, Benny Gantz, has threatened to leave the government if a plan is not formulated by June 8 that includes an international administration for postwar Gaza.

Israel’s war on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ongoing violence has displaced around 80% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom have been forced to relocate multiple times within the territory.

Speaking at the same event, UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini said that “almost nothing” in terms of aid is getting into the Gaza Strip after Israel closed the Rafah crossing and Karem Abu Salem crossing, known as Kerem Shalom to Israelis.

The UN has been “regularly and blatantly disregarded in Gaza,” he insisted. “Look at the number of staff who have been killed, more than 200, among them 189 staff from UNRWA,” he added.

He recalled that over 160 UN facilities have been damaged or completely destroyed. In addition, numerous UN staff members have been detained, mistreated, tortured, and coerced into confessions during Israel’s war on Gaza, Lazzarini added.
