Rabat – Morocco is a “vital” US partner in a wide range of regional security issues, the US State Department declared in a statement posted on Monday.

The statement highlighted the deep-rooted partnership between the United States and Morocco, emphasizing their shared objectives of fostering stability and security.

“Morocco is a vital U.S. partner on a wide range of regional security issues, with a shared goal of a stable, secure, and prosperous Middle East and North Africa,” the statement read.

The State Department acknowledged the extensive collaboration between the two countries in various spheres, including security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and economic ties.

“The United States works closely with Morocco to promote regional stability, counter-terrorism, strengthen trade and investment ties, and support Morocco’s development and reform efforts,” the statement noted.

Regarding the longstanding commitment to security cooperation, the statement pointed out that “The United States has provided Morocco with security cooperation since the late 1950s, reflecting the enduring nature of the bilateral relationship.”

It further elaborated on the significance of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that delineate critical areas of security and economic cooperation.

In addition, the press release emphasized Morocco’s contribution to multilateral defense efforts. “Morocco is a stalwart partner in multilateral defense,” the statement stated, pointing out its participation in initiatives such as the NATO Mediterranean Dialogue and its designation as a Major Non-NATO ally.

Regarding defense cooperation, the statement highlighted Morocco’s status as the largest purchaser of US military equipment in Africa.

In terms of financial assistance, the State Department detailed  that “since 2012, the United States has provided Morocco with $135 million in Foreign Military Financing (FMF).”  The statement also highlighted the support provided to Morocco through the International Military Education and Training (IMET) program.

The US State Department further commanded Morocco’s role in international peacekeeping operations and counterterrorism efforts. “Morocco is among the top ten contributors to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide,” the statement explains.
