Rabat – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued on Thursday a binding ordinance demanding that Israel take immediate action to alleviate the dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, citing the risk of genocide and condemning the deteriorating living conditions faced by Palestinians.

In their ruling, the judges of the ICJ, the highest United Nations (UN) court, emphasized the urgent need for action to address the worsening situation in Gaza, following a request from South Africa lodged earlier this month.

This marks the second legal procedure initiated by Pretoria against Israel at the ICJ, with the country accusing the Israel Occupation Forces (IOF) of violating the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

In its decisive ordinance, the ICJ outlined specific measures that Israel must “undertake all necessary and effective measures,” including ensuring the provision of basic services and urgent humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

The court emphasized the necessity of cooperation with the United Nations to address critical needs such as food, water, electricity, shelter, and medical supplies. Additionally, the ruling mandates that Israel’s military refrain from actions that violate the rights of Palestinians as protected under international law.

This ordinance comes in response to a request made by South Africa on March 6, urging the ICJ to impose additional provisional measures to address the dire situation in Gaza.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health has painted a grim picture of the devastating consequences of the IOF’s brutal war on Gaza,  reporting over 32,000 deaths and nearly 75,000 injuries since October 7, 2023.

The war has also led to the displacement of 85% of Gaza’s population and extensive damage to infrastructure, exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe.

According to the United Nations, the majority of Gaza’s 2.4 million inhabitants are now at risk of famine due to severe shortages of essential resources. Despite international efforts, insufficient aid has been provided to meet the urgent needs of the population, leading to a dire humanitarian crisis.
