Rabat – Minister of Transportation Mohamed Abdeljalil responded to concerns about the lack of regulations on ridesharing apps, stressing the necessity for consensus among stakeholders in the public sector to introduce such provisions effectively.
In a press briefing today, Abdeljalil said that regulating ridesharing applications would require consensus among all public transportation stakeholders.
“Regulating transportation cannot be achieved unless all stakeholders in public transportation, including small and large taxis and buses are ready to enter this type of transportation into the market,” the minister said.
Backing taxi services in Morocco, the minister said that the country’s transportation system has its specificities and that “small and grand taxis are fulfilling an important role and providing services for Moroccan citizens as they handle the primary public transport needs in Morocco.
The minister emphasized that the ministry is working on launching a study related to developing a future vision for mobility across the kingdom to prepare the transportation sector.
The statements came following violent clashes between Moroccan taxi drivers and drivers of app-based companies.
In recent weeks, several videos have gone viral of taxi drivers assaulting an InDrive driver and their passenger.
One of the latest videos showed three taxi drivers assaulting a ridesharing driver and smashing the windshield of his car. Following the incident, human rights groups are now calling on the government to regulate app-based transportation to avert further violence.
