Football is shocked by the sudden, tragic loss of Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota, who has died in a car crash in Spain at the age of 28. His younger brother, André Silva, also lost his life in the accident.
The crash occurred at 00:30 GMT+1 in Cernadilla, Zamora, as the brothers were travelling in a Lamborghini. According to the Spanish Guardia Civil, the vehicle suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking, veered off the A-52 motorway and caught fire.
Both men died at the scene.
Liverpool FC issued a sombre statement this morning: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”
The club asked for privacy for the family and said it would make no further comment for now.
Just ten days ago, Jota married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso. The couple have three young children. What should have been the beginning of a joyful new chapter has turned into a heartbreaking nightmare.
In a tribute posted on social media, FC Porto, where both brothers played in their youth, said:
“It is with shock and deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Rest in peace.”
Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, described Jota as “much more than an amazing player… an extraordinary person, someone with an infectious joy.”
A minute’s silence will be held before Portugal’s Women’s Euro qualifier against Spain on Thursday evening.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 for $55 million and went on to score 65 goals in 182 appearances. He helped the Reds win the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Shield, and two Carabao Cups.
His versatility, work rate and lethal finishing made him a fan favourite. Off the pitch, he was known as humble, kind, and deeply devoted to his family.
