Rabat – Morocco saw a 2.4% uptick in electricity production in 2023, compared to a 0.4% increase the previous year, according to a recent report from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF).
The surge in production is attributed to the robust performance of private-sector production, which saw a remarkable increase of 5.3%.
In addition, green energy production gained traction in 2023, in line with the provisions of law 13-09, recording an 18.3% annual growth rate.
However, the progress was offset by a decline in production from the National Office of Water and Electricity (ONEE), which saw a decrease of 9.4%, following a 15% increase the year before.
December 2023 saw a particularly impressive increase in electricity production, soaring by 10.7% compared to the same period in the previous year.
The report also highlights a significant rise in the volume of imported electrical energy. Imports surged by 23.8% by the end of 2023, down from the 171.4% increase recorded a year earlier.
Meanwhile, the volume of net energy, including both imports and exports, rose by 4%, continuing the positive trajectory from the previous year.
In terms of consumption, the report indicates a 2.7% increase in electricity consumption by the end of 2023, following a 4.6% increase in 2022.
The rise is primarily due to increased sales of electricity across various sectors, including very high, high, and medium voltage energy sales, distributor sales, and household consumption.
Morocco’s rising energy consumption reflects the growth in its demography, and industrial activities.
In December 2023, the country’s energy minister said that the rise in energy consumption makes it necessary for the country to bolster grid development, particularly to surpass the 52% target of installed capacity based on renewables by 2030.
