Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed seven Moroccan referees to officiate games at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), to be held in Cote d’Ivoire, according to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
The same source added that the list includes Bouchra Karboubi as a main referee, along with Jalal Jaid and Samir Kazzaz.
Karboubi also stands out as the only woman among the main referees selected to officiate in the continental competition.
Morocco’s Mustapha Akerkad and Lahcen Azguaou were appointed as assistant referees, while Redouane Jayed and Zakaria Brinzi will serve as VAR referees.
The 2023 AFCON is scheduled to run from January 13 until February 11 with the participation of 24 teams. Morocco is sitting in Group F alongside DR Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia, and will aim to win its second AFCON title.
On December 20, CAF unveiled the preliminary squads for all the 24 countries competing in the upcoming AFCON.
This year’s edition allowed for 27 players to take part in the championship instead of 23 in the previous editions.
