Rabat – In close coordination with the services of the General Directorate of territory surveillance (DGST), members of the Tangier police prefecture’s anti-gang brigade terminated a psychotropic drug trafficking operation on Tuesday, confiscating over 131,000 ecstasy tablets.
According to a press release issued by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), a 34-year-old man was arrested during a security operation on Tangier’s outskirts for his alleged involvement in a criminal network that is engaged in the illegal trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances.
The same source added that the suspect holds a criminal record and is the subject of several wanted people nationwide.
During searches conducted at several of the suspect’s houses, the police found psychiatric medications hidden separately in plastic bags.
A commercial vehicle and a sizable quantity of cash, reportedly more than MAD 971,000 (almost $97.000), were also seized during the searches.
The defendant was taken into police custody for investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine the alleged ramifications of this criminal activity and to clarify all the crimes of which he is accused.
This operation is part of the continuous efforts of the DGSN, in coordination with the DGST, in the fight against the networks of trafficking of illicit drugs and psychotropic substances,, the same source stressed.
In recent years, the Moroccan police have been actively involved in the fight against drug trafficking, which mainly targets young people.
According to an announcement from the DGSN, police officers previously intercepted 1,880 psychotropic ecstasy tablets in the possession of three people who were connected to the trafficking of drugs and psychiatric medications in the rural part of Sidi Kankouch near Tangier.
