Mohammedia – In a significant development for both the AI and cryptocurrency sectors, Microsoft has entered into a five-year agreement with Nebius, a Netherlands-based company, to supply GPU infrastructure for its artificial intelligence operations.

Valued at US$17.4 billion, with the potential to expand to US$19.4 billion, the deal underscores the escalating demand for high-performance computing resources to support generative AI technologies. Nebius will provide dedicated GPU capacity from its new data center in Vineland, New Jersey, slated to begin operations in 2025.

The announcement of this partnership has had a profound impact on the cryptocurrency mining industry. Shares of mining companies surged, reflecting investor optimism about the growing intersection between AI infrastructure and crypto mining.

Bitfarms notably experienced a 22% increase in its stock price, while Cipher Mining rose by 20%. Other companies, including IREN, Hut 8, Riot Platforms, and TeraWulf, saw mid-teen percentage gains.

This surge in mining stocks is particularly striking given the concurrent decline in Bitcoin’s price, which fell approximately 1% to US$111,100. The divergence between Bitcoin’s market performance and the rise in mining stocks suggests that investors are increasingly valuing the infrastructure capabilities of mining companies over the direct price movements of cryptocurrencies.

The Microsoft-Nebius deal highlights a strategic shift within the mining industry. Historically, mining companies have been heavily reliant on cryptocurrency prices, particularly Bitcoin, to drive profitability.

Yet as demand for AI computing power intensifies, these companies are exploring new revenue streams by leveraging their existing infrastructure to provide services to AI firms. This pivot towards AI infrastructure is exemplified by Nebius’s use of Nvidia technology in its data centers, positioning itself as a key player in the AI cloud services market.

The partnership between Microsoft and Nebius is part of a broader trend where major tech companies are seeking to secure dedicated AI infrastructure to meet the growing demands of AI development.

With global supply chains for GPUs remaining tight, collaborations like this one ensure that companies have reliable access to the necessary computing resources without being subject to the volatility of the open market.
