Rabat – While Morocco’s government continues to hold meetings with teachers’ unions, the National Coordination Committee for the Education Sector, a teacher’s union not taking part in the dialogue with the government, has called on teachers to continue to strike for four more days next week.
In a statement on Friday, the National Coordination Committee for the Education Sector called on teachers to take part in a national strike on December 13, 14, 15, and 16.
Notably, the teachers’ union urged teachers to organize protests in front of the directorates of the region or the regional academies on Thursday, December 14, at eleven o’clock in the morning.
They announced that they will equally hold a press conference, adding that the exact details concerning the press release will be issued at a later stage.
Since the start of the ongoing school year, Morocco’s education sector has been marred with public teachers’ protests denouncing a new reform that they say overloads them with work without offering proper compensation.
The news of the strike came on the same day that the government held a meeting with teachers’ unions to find a common ground.
The main demand of the striking teachers is an increase in salaries to compensate for what they perceive as an increased workload. Meanwhile, the government recently announced a freeze on the controversial reform.
On November 28, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch called on teachers to return to classrooms as his government pledged to return to the negotiations table.
But the freezing of the reform did little to appease teachers, as new calls for protests erupted in less than a week after his statement.
In particular, the unions expressed their disillusionment with the government’s bargaining tactics and accused the authorities of excluding the legitimate representatives of the teachers from the bargaining process.
