Rabat – Moroccan Professor Najia El Abbadi has become the first female leader of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS).

The announcement was made during the 18th World Congress of Neurosurgery in Cape Town, South Africa, where El Abbadi was elected to spearhead the global neurosurgical organization.

El Abbadi’s ascension to the position marks a significant milestone for Moroccan representation on a global level, as well as a historic event for women globally, particularly as she is now the first African and Arab woman to hold such a high-ranking position in the field.

El Abbadi, who was previously elected as the federation’s president in 2021, gathered 127 votes (50.4%).

Her vision includes a focus on enhancing neurosurgical standards, especially in regions with limited resources.

Under her leadership, a collaborative strategy has been outlined to foster transparency and cooperative international alliances with representation from key nations like the US, Brazil, Italy, and Spain.

El Abbadi has been a Professor in neurosurgery since 1990. She is also Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat and the Chairman of the WFNS Women in Neurosurgery Committee. She also serves as the president of the Moroccan Society of Neurosurgery.

EL Abbadi has been the program director of the Stereotactic surgery certificate at Mohammed V University since 2008 and has authored over 100 scientific publications in several scientific international and national journals.

In addition to chapter contributions to books on neurosurgery, she has also delivered more than 500 lectures and presentations at international and national conferences.

The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies was founded in Switzerland in 1955 as a professional, scientific, and non-governmental organization, comprising 130 member societies.

Holding advisory status with the United Nations, the WFNS promotes the overall improvement of neurosurgical care. The federation’s mission is to collaborate with its member societies to enhance neurosurgical care, education, and research worldwide for the benefit of patients.
