Rabat – The massive overhaul of Ibn Batouta Stadium is complete, and the new roof is done, already setting a high bar for other stadiums to follow. The Grand Stade de Tanger recently achieved a major milestone by completing its construction in record time.

On Thursday evening, the final piece of the stadium’s elastic membrane was placed, with the entire structure completed in an impressively efficient 69 days. Which is pretty unheard of for a stadium roof of this size.

The new roof covers a massive 55,000 m² and uses a special high-performance material imported from Germany that allows for a plethora of light, while also resisting corrosion and handling rainwater with ease.

Tangier’s stadium goes next-level

The roof renovation was part of a much bigger picture. The entire stadium got a major revamp ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and with an eye on the FIFA World Cup 2030. The list of upgrades is a long one:

  • Expanding the seating capacity to approximately 75,000
  • Eliminating the athletics track to make the venue exclusively for football
  • Installing a hybrid pitch that meets FIFA regulations
  • Creating better access for fans, media, and VIP areas

Now that the many months of challenging renovations are done, the stadium is ready for fans to attend games in its first matches in a week.

The Morocco national team will use the stadium for friendlies against Mozambique on November 14 and Uganda on November 18 at 20:00 GMT+1 local time. These matches will be the first opportunity for fans to see the renovated stadium before it’s used for the AFCON 2025.
