Rabat – Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, said today that UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2797 on the Western Sahara strengthens international recognition of Morocco’s position as a regional and global power.
Speaking before the House of Representatives during the monthly session on general policy, Akhannouch said the resolution, whose date, October 31, has been declared a national holiday by King Mohammed VI, affirms Morocco’s territorial integrity and consolidates the country’s international standing.
“This resolution transcends a simple vote on a just cause; it reflects implicit recognition of Morocco’s important status as a regional and international power under the leadership of His Majesty the King,” he said.
Akhannouch also described Resolution 2797 as the result of Morocco’s clear strategic vision and its active role in promoting peace, coexistence, and tolerance at regional and international levels.
According to the Head of Government, the Western Sahara file has now moved from a phase of stagnation to one of dynamic management. “This stage opens the way for constructive dialogue and the pursuit of consensus among all parties,” he noted.
Morocco’s strategic approach to defending its territorial integrity does not rely solely on political discourse or international confidence but on sustained action across complementary fronts, Akhannouch suggested.
Alongside official and parallel diplomatic efforts, he noted the importance of economic and social development as tools to combat vulnerability and strengthen national unity.
Southern provinces and regional development
Moreover, Akhannouch commended the strong political and electoral participation of citizens in Morocco’s southern provinces, describing it as clear proof of their unwavering attachment to the country’s territorial integrity and their contribution to regional development.
“The responsible involvement of our southern populations in managing their own affairs reinforces national unity and demonstrates that these provinces fully enjoy their constitutional, political, and civil rights,” he affirmed.
Morocco’s southern provinces are rapidly transforming into thriving investment hubs, driven by major infrastructure, energy, and tourism projects. From the Dakhla Atlantic Port to large-scale renewable energy developments, the region is attracting national and international investors.
With its strategic location, modern infrastructure, and investor-friendly policies, southern Morocco is becoming a key driver of the country’s economic growth and a gateway to African markets.
